New Zealand Wine Day Recap
My wife and I attended Complexity’s 2nd Annual New Zealand Wine Day at Aureole in New York City. This was our first social media wine tasting event and hopefully it won’t be our last because we had a great time! In a nutshell, you taste a variety of good wine and tweet and blog about it as you taste. It’s wine tasting with a social media twist.
World Wine Guys
When we first got to the restaurant, we were brought to a table where we were introduced to Mike DeSimone and Jeff Jenssen. They both write for Wine Enthusiast Magazine and they tweet at World Wine Guys. They are also both about to be published authors of two food and wine books.
Reds, Whites and Food
We first ordered our appetizers. I got a winter market salad and my wife ordered a crab salad. Both were very tasty and went perfectly with the 5 whites we tried — 3 Sauvignon Blancs, 1 Chardonnay and 1 Pinot Gris. For dinner, I ordered a chicken dish and my wife got a gourmet burger. Both were delicious! As we were enjoying our dinner, we started tasting the reds — 4 Pinot Noirs, 1 blend and 1 Syrah. We ended the night with chocolate ice cream and mousse cake.
I definitely had my favorites, both reds. My first favorite was a New Zealand Pinot Noir — Mt. Difficulty Estate Pinot Noir Central Otago. This was a very creamy style, ripe cherry Pinot. My second favorite was a New Zealand Syrah — Craggy Range Syrah Le Sol Hawke’s Bay. This wine was awesome. Lush, smooth and blueberry pie.
While we were tasting the wine, we were given access to an online portal where we can tweet and Facebook our thoughts. I was tweeting at Wine75Reviews using the hashtag #nzwineday. It was a pretty cool experience to have my laptop on the table as I ate, tasted wine and tweeted!
Overall, we had a great time. Good wine, good food and we met a lot of nice people. We thank Aureole, Complexity and Wine Cellar Age for having us. And a huge thanks goes out to Justin from Aureole that gave us a tour of their amazing wine cellar!
